Origin
Ferocactus pilosus, also known as the Mexican fire barrel, is a native cactus species from Northern Mexico. This particular cactus is found in the dry deserts of the Mexican provinces of Coahuila, Durango, Sonora and Zacatecas. The plant grows best at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 metres above sea-level and is often found on limestone and volcanic soils.
Characteristics
The Ferocactus pilosus is a large, thick, cylindrical cactus which can mature to a height of 2 to 4 metres, with a diameter of 35 centimetres. The plant has a bright green to dark green colour, with up to 21 ribs equipped with long, white spikes. Vivid red flowers bloom on the edges of the ribs in the summer, followed by yellow fruits once they have been pollinated. The surface of the plant is covered with small white hairs, also called lanate, giving the plant its 'pilosus' name.
Care
Despite its origin in the dry climate of Northern Mexico, the Ferocactus pilosus requires only moderate watering. Excessive water can cause root rot. A fast-drying soil is recommended and good drainage is essential to prevent water accumulation. The plant prefers direct light and can thrive in full sun. During the winter months, the plant should be kept indoors at temperatures no lower than 10°C. It's important to remember that this cactus grows slowly, so patience is required in caring for this unusual species.
