Origin
The Begonia rex Etna, also known as the Queen Begonia, originates from the moist, tropical rainforests of Northern India. The plant is named after the active Etna volcano in Sicily, due to its fiery leaf colours. The cultivated forms we now know are the result of crossbreeding and are less commonly found in the wild.

Characteristics
The Begonia rex Etna is principally known for its distinct and attractive leaf colours. The foliage has a unique interplay of red, purple and silver, with the edges often having a curly shape. The plant typically reaches a maximum height of 45 to 60 cm and the leaves can grow up to 30 cm wide in full maturity. The flowers are generally small and less noticeable than the foliage.

Care
The care for the Begonia rex Etna requires a specific approach. The plant prefers moist but well-draining soil and does not cope well with standing water. In addition, it requires high humidity and a sunny to semi-shaded location. The optimal temperature for the growth of this plant ranges between 16 and 24 degrees Celsius, hence it is often kept as a house plant. It is also recommended to regularly mist the plant and give it less water during the winter.
