Origin
The Opuntia mix, also known as the prickly pear, has its origin in areas around North and South America. This cactus type is most common in the tropical and subtropical regions of Mexico. The plant thrives in various habitats, ranging from high in the mountains to lower desert-like areas.
Characteristics
Opuntia mix belongs to the cactus family and is recognizable by its flat, oval to round disc-shaped 'pads'. These are, in fact, modified stems that fulfill the function of leaves. The feathered thorns are covered with a layer of hairs that makes them difficult to remove once they penetrate the skin. Also striking are the large, beautiful flowers in colours like yellow, red, orange or white that the cactus produces.
Care
Like other cacti, Opuntia mix requires little water and loves a sunny, warm environment. In general, the plant should only be watered when the soil is completely dry. Well-draining soil is also essential to prevent root rot. Like most cacti, the Opuntia mix can survive low temperatures during the winter months, but the plant is intolerant to damp, cold weather conditions.
