Ilex crenata
F00002204
Origin
The Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Green Pillar', also known as the Lawson cypress, originates from the western region of North America. More specifically, it grows in its natural habitat against the mountain range along the Pacific coast from Alaska to Northern California.
Characteristics
The 'Green Pillar' is a conifer and has densely packed leaves which are a dark green in colour. This plant, a variant of the Lawson cypress, has a distinctively slender, column-like growth habit. It typically reaches a height between 10 and 20 metres, but can grow even taller in very favourable conditions. The Lawson cypress produces small, cone-shaped fruits that are brown in colour.
Care
It is essential for the 'Green Pillar' to be planted in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. It should be planted in full sun or semi-shade and in an area that provides sufficient space for its growth. The plant is sturdy and tolerates most soil types, but it prefers neutral to mildly acidic conditions. Some pruning can be undertaken to maintain the shape, but overall this cypress requires little maintenance.
