Origin
The Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba', also known as the White Bleeding Heart, is a variety with white flowers of the well-known Dicentra spectabilis. This plant, originally from East Asia, has gained a special appreciation in European gardens since the 20th century. It grows best in a wooded environment, reflecting its original habitat in the forests and mountains of Northern China, Korea and Eastern Siberia.
Characteristics
The Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba' has a striking appearance with its bright white, heart-shaped flowers that hang on graceful curved stems. The flowers appear in the late spring and early summer, creating a fairy-tale scene in the garden. The plant typically reaches a height of 60 to 90 cm and the broad, decorative leaves are almost as attractive as the flowers themselves.
Care
Healthy growth of the Dicentra spectabilis 'Alba' requires fertile, moist and well-draining soil with a partially to completely shady location. The plant is hardy, but the foliage usually dies back in the late summer or autumn and will return the following spring. The soil must be regularly replenished with organic material to promote growth. Despite its delicate appearance, this plant is surprisingly easy to grow and requires little maintenance, provided the right conditions are provided.
