Origin
The Macodes petola, also known as the Lightning Bolt Orchid, has its origins in Asia. It is mainly found in the moist lowlands of countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It is a subtropical plant species that is part of the orchid family.

Characteristics
The Macodes petola is an epiphytic plant, which means it grows on other plants without taking nutrients from them. It is characterised by dark, velvety leaves with distinctive gold veins running in a complex pattern across the leaf. This feature often leads it to be compared to lightning, hence the nickname 'Lightning Bolt Orchid'. The plant produces small but striking flowers that are usually green or white in colour.

Care
The Macodes petola requires specific care to thrive. It prefers high humidity, ideally between 70% and 100%. In addition, it requires indirect lighting, as direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. The plant also needs good air circulation and fares best at a temperature of around 20-25 degrees Celsius. It is important to note that the Macodes petola is sensitive to over-watering and it is therefore important only to water the plant when the soil feels dry.
