Origin
The Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka', also known as the Hollywood Juniper, has its origin in East Asia, where it is native to China, Mongolia, Japan, and Korea. This evergreen shrub is part of the cypress family.
Characteristics
The Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka' stands out because of its irregular, fan-shaped growth pattern. The plant generally reaches a height between 3 and 5 metres. The blue-green needle-like leaves remain throughout the year, thus providing visual interest in all seasons. It produces blue-black berries that are attractive to birds and other animals.
Care
The Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka' is a robust plant and can thrive both in full sun and semi-shade. Although it grows better in well-draining soil, the plant is very adaptable and thrives in a variety of soil types. It is recommended to water it regularly, especially during periods of drought, but it is quite drought tolerant once established. Fertilising is generally not considered necessary. An annual pruning is recommended for optimal shape and health.
