Origin
The Alcea rosea Chater's Double Yellow, also commonly known as the Yellow Hollyhock, originally hails from the Eastern Mediterranean region. Since then, it has spread to Europe and America, where it has been further cultivated.
Characteristics
The Yellow Hollyhock is a very distinctive plant, with large, bright yellow coloured flowers that grow on tall stems, making it an ideal plant for adding a vertical element to a garden. The flowers are also double, meaning that they have multiple rows of petals. It is a biannual plant, indicating that it completes its full life cycle in two years.
Care
The Alcea rosea Chater's Double Yellow requires full sun and well-draining soil to thrive. It is able to withstand drought, but it prefers a regular watering schedule during dry periods. In its first year, the plant grows into a rosette of leaves, whilst the flower stems and flowers appear in the second year. After flowering, the plant can produce seeds, which can be handy for future planting. Although relatively disease-resistant, conditions such as rust can best be prevented by maintaining good air circulation.
