Origin
The Strelitzia Nicolai, also known as the Giant Bird of Paradise, has its origins in the south of Africa. This plant mainly grows in the wild in South Africa and Madagascar. The Strelitzia Nicolai is a member of the Strelitziaceae family.
Characteristics
The Strelitzia Nicolai is an imposing plant with large, banana-like leaves that grow from a tall trunk. Under ideal conditions, the plant can reach as high as 12 metres. Unlike smaller Strelitzia species, the Nicolai mainly produces white flowers, which in the wild are primarily pollinated by birds.
Care
The Strelitzia Nicolai is a plant that enjoys plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. Therefore, a spot with filtered light is ideal. The plant needs regular watering, especially during the growing season from spring to autumn. It is important that the plant is regularly fertilised, ideally once a month. If the pot plant becomes too small, replanting may be necessary. If the outside temperature falls below 10 degrees Celsius, the plant should be moved indoors.
