Origin
Abies balsamea 'Nana' has its origin in North America. This cultivar is derived from the common balsam fir, Abies balsamea. It is a dwarf form specifically selected for its compact growth. The plant is widely used in Europe as an ornamental shrub.
Characteristics
Abies balsamea 'Nana' remains very low and grows slowly. The plant forms a dense, cushion-like shrub with dark green, soft needles. The needles are aromatic and have two white stripes on the underside. The maximum height is about 60 centimetres, and the width can reach approximately 90 centimetres. The growth habit is rounded and compact.
Care
This dwarf conifer requires a sunny to lightly shaded location. The soil should be well-draining and preferably slightly moist. Abies balsamea 'Nana' is fully hardy and tolerates cold temperatures. Pruning is rarely necessary due to its compact growth.
