Origin
The Araucaria heterophylla, also known as the Norfolk Island Pine, originated from the remote Norfolk Island in the Pacific Ocean. This island is situated between Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. It is quite a phenomenon that this species arose in such a small and isolated area. It is an endemic species that has adapted exceptionally well to the unique conditions of the island.
Characteristics
The Araucaria heterophylla is especially notable for its symmetrical shape and layered structure. The tree can grow up to 65 meters high in its natural habitat, but remains smaller in a domestic environment. The needle-like leaves are bright green and lush, covering the whole tree. The tree produces oval cones that are about a centimetre in size.
Care
The Araucaria heterophylla is a demanding plant when it comes to care. It requires a sunny spot, but must not be exposed to direct sunlight. Watering must be consistent; the soil should not dry out but should also not be too wet. The plant's root ball should be checked regularly; if the top layer is dry, watering is required. It is also important that the plant is placed in a location where the temperature is stable, as the Araucaria heterophylla tolerates little temperature fluctuations.
