Origin
The Hypoestes phyllostachya Mix, also known as the Polka Dot Plant, originates from Madagascar. This African island is famous for its rich biodiversity and unique plant species. As this plant grows beneath the canopy of larger plants in its natural habitat, it has adapted to living in semi-shade.
Characteristics
The Hypoestes phyllostachya Mix distinguishes itself with its striking leaf colours. The leaves are usually speckled pink, red, white or purple against a deep green background, earning the plant its alternative name, the Polka Dot Plant. The plant has small, trumpet-shaped flowers which are less noticeable than the foliage. Typically, the plant grows to a height of 30 to 50cm.
Care
The Hypoestes phyllostachya Mix requires slightly damp soil and a spot in semi-shade. It favours a temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius for optimal growth. Although the plant can withstand dry air, occasional spraying can contribute to its growth. The plant does not need much nutrition, once per month is sufficient.
