Origin
The Picea pungens 'Koster', also known as the Colorado blue spruce, has its origin in the Rocky Mountains in North America. Here, the tree grows at altitudes ranging from 1800 to 3300 metres. The plant was brought to Europe around the end of the 19th century and is now widespread because of its attractive blue-grey needles.

Characteristics
Distinctive characteristics of the Picea pungens 'Koster' are the stiff, sharp, silvery-blue needles. They are distributed in a spiral pattern around the branches. This evergreen conifer grows in a pyramidal shape and can reach a height of about 20 metres. The needles have a strong scent when crushed. The tree also bears brown cones in the late spring and summer, which can grow up to 10 centimetres long.

Care
The Picea pungens 'Koster' is a low-maintenance plant and requires little care. It grows best in full sun, but can also somewhat tolerate being in partial shade. The tree prefers a well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Although it is a drought-tolerant tree, regular watering during dry periods will contribute to healthier growth. Pruning is generally not necessary, unless to maintain the shape or remove dead branches.
