Origin
The Allium 'Party Balloons' is a garden variant of the Allium genus, which is part of the Amaryllidaceae family, the onion family. The Allium genus encompasses over 700 species and can be found all over the world, except in the tropical parts. The 'Party Balloons' variant has been specially bred for its unique characteristics and does not have a specific geographic origin.
Characteristics
'Party Balloons' is known for its striking spherical flowers that resemble festive balloons, hence the name. The flowers, varying in colour from light purple to pink, appear in late spring or early summer on long, slender stems above narrow, green leaves. The plant usually grows 60 to 90 centimetres in height, with flower heads that can grow up to 15 centimetres in diameter. It is a deciduous plant and its flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies.
Care
Allium 'Party Balloons' is an easy-to-care-for plant, which thrives best in a spot in full sun or partial shade. It needs well-draining soil to prevent the bulbs from rotting. Although the plant is drought-tolerant, it performs best with regular watering during the growing period. After flowering, the stems and leaves can be cut off and the plant should be given a rest period before it is replanted in late autumn or early winter. Fertiliser or plant food is generally not needed, unless the soil is particularly poor.
