Origin
The Vriesea Happy Mix, also known as the Bromeliad, has its origin in the tropical parts of South America. It is a member of the Bromeliaceae family, a large group of mainly epiphytic plants that are found throughout the continent. The first specimens were brought to Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
A striking characteristic of the Vriesea Happy Mix is the large rosette of leaves, from which a flower stem grows with a striking, flat flowering pattern. The vibrant colours range from yellow, red to deep purple. It is an epiphytic plant, which means that it naturally occurs on other plants without extracting nutrients from its host. Its size can vary, but in a domestic environment, the Vriesea usually does not grow larger than 60 centimetres.
Care
The Vriesea Happy Mix is relatively easy to maintain. It prefers indirect sunlight and is best placed in a bright spot, away from direct sunlight. It is important to ensure that the plant gets enough water, but the water should not remain in the pot as this can drown the roots. As a general rule, watering once a week is sufficient. It is not necessary to fertilise the plant regularly, but a light fertilisation during the growing season can support growth and flowering.
