Euphorbia tubiglans
F00001653
Origin
The Euphorbia pulcherrima, better known as the poinsettia, has its origin in Mexico and Central America. It is found in tropical rainforests and was first described by the German physician and botanist Karl Wilhelm Schuchardt in 1834. The plant is named after the first ambassador of the United States to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, who brought the plant to America.
Characteristics
The poinsettia is a shrub that can grow up to four meters high in the wild. It stands out because of its bright red, lance-shaped bracts that are often mistaken for flowers. The actual flowers of the plant are small and yellow and are located in the centre of the bracts. The plant has dark green leaves that contrast with the brightly coloured bracts.
Care
The poinsettia requires regular care both indoors and in the garden to be able to grow and bloom. The plant prefers a light, warm spot without draughts. In the summer, the plant needs to be watered when the top layer of the soil has dried out. In the winter, the watering should be reduced. It is recommended to regularly fertilise the plant with houseplant food for optimal growth.
