Origin
The Hildewintera colademononis, also known simply as the 'Monkey Tail' cactus, is originally from Bolivia. In the wild, this rare and endangered species of cactus grows among the rocks in the hills of Tarija, an area renowned for its diversity of cacti.
Characteristics
The Hildewintera colademononis is a hanging or climbing cactus that is distinguished by its long, slender, hanging stems. These stems are divided into small segments with fine white spines that cover the surface. The plant blooms with large, bright red flowers in late winter or early spring. It is this spectacular bloom that gave the plant its second name, 'Monkey Tail'.
Care
Optimal care for the Hildewintera colademononis includes a light but not directly sunlit spot and a well-draining soil. The plant is susceptible to excess moisture, which can lead to root and stem rot. It is important to water the plant moderately, maintaining a dry period between waterings. During the winter months, this cactus has a resting period where less water is needed. Fertilising should only be done sparingly during the growing period.
