Asplenium antiquum 'Amy'
1ASAMBP10
Origin
The Microsorum 'crocodyllus' is a graceful fern species originating from the tropical areas of Southeast Asia and Australia. There, the plant primarily grows in forests and on rocks, where conditions are warm and humid. In the wild, the fern can attach itself to other plants or trees without harming or suffocating them.
Characteristics
The Microsorum 'crocodyllus', often referred to as the crocodile fern, owes its name to the unique structure of the leaf that resembles the skin of a crocodile. The leaf is leathery and dark green in colour. The leaves are elongated and roughly 10 to 30 cm long. Each leaf is slightly wavy and has a clear central vein with smaller lateral veins, which mimic the pattern of a crocodile's skin.
Care
The Microsorum 'crocodyllus' favours a shaded location, but can also reside in partial shade. The plant cannot handle direct sunlight well, as this can cause the leaves to burn. The Microsorum 'crocodyllus' constantly needs moisture and requires a high humidity for optimal growth. It is important to water the plant regularly and keep the soil slightly moist at all times. In the cooler months, less watering is sufficient. Too much direct water can cause root rot. For the best growth conditions, the Microsorum 'crocodyllus' can be best planted in a planter with numerous drainage holes and a potting soil mixture that drains well.
