Origin
The Archontophoenix alexandrae, also known as the king palm, originates from Australia. This type of palm prefers growing in tropical and subtropical regions. In Australia itself, it is primarily found in the rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales. The plant is named after Queen Alexandra of Denmark.
Characteristics
The Archontophoenix alexandrae is an elegant, tall palm, which can reach a height of 15 to 25 metres. The trunk is solitary, slender and straight, with an attractive, light-grey bark. The leaves are feathery and can reach a length of 2 to 3 metres, with flowers that vary from white to cream. The fruits that the palm tree produces are small, red and oval-shaped.
Care
The king palm needs a lot of sunlight and prefers not to be exposed to temperatures below freezing point. The plant prefers loose, rich, well-drained soil and should be watered generously, but can also tolerate short periods of drought. It is recommended to protect the tree from strong winds due to the possibility of trunk damage. The tree requires little maintenance, except for the periodic pruning of the dead leaves.
