Origin
The Cereus jamacaru, also known as the Mandacaru, is a type of cactus originally found in the northeastern part of Brazil. The plant mainly grows in dry, desert-like areas. This plant has managed centuries long adaptation to inhospitable conditions and a sparse moist climate.
Characteristics
The Cereus jamacaru is a large, sturdy, pustular cactus that grows between 3 and 9 metres tall. The plant has an irregular, usually cylindrical trunk with 4 to 6 ribs. The flowers are large and white, and they open at night to attract various Hawk moths for pollination. The fruits are ovate and contain a sweetish flesh that can be consumed by both humans and animals.
Care
Despite the toughness of this plant, the Cereus jamacaru still requires some care to grow optimally. This cactus needs plenty of direct sunlight and should be placed in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Although the plant is drought-resistant, regular watering during the growing season is necessary. The cactus can tolerate low temperatures down to -6 degrees Celsius, but if it's consistently exposed to the cold, it could be harmful.
