Origin
The Gymnocalycium saglionis is a cactus species that originally comes from South America, specifically from the Argentine provinces of Catamarca and Tucumán. The plant grows at altitudes of up to 3000 meters above sea level, mainly in rocky and dry areas. These unique conditions have contributed to the development of the specific characteristics and adaptations of the Gymnocalycium saglionis. The plant has long been a favourite among succulent enthusiasts.
Characteristics
The Gymnocalycium saglionis stands out due to its large size - mature specimens can reach a diameter of 40 centimetres and grow up to 20 centimetres high. The plant has a dark green to grey colour and forms a flat, dish-shaped bulb with soft spines. The flowers of the Gymnocalycium saglionis are striking: they are large, white to pink in colour and develop at the top of the cactus, which is unusual for cacti. They bloom in late spring and early summer.
Care
Like many cacti, the Gymnocalycium saglionis needs a lot of light, but performs best in filtered light or partial shade to avoid sunburn. The plant thrives at temperatures between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Watering should be done sparingly, particularly in winter when the plant is at rest. During growing periods - spring and summer - more water can be given, but the soil should completely dry out between watering times. Finally, the Gymnocalycium saglionis occasionally needs some cactus fertilizer to stay healthy.
