Origin
The Stetsonia coryne, better known as the Toothpick cactus, is originally from the northern parts of Argentina and Bolivia. The plant is primarily found in dry and semi-dry areas of these countries. Regardless of its origin, the Stetsonia coryne can now be found worldwide, mainly as an ornamental plant.
Characteristics
The Stetsonia coryne is a cactus that can grow up to a height of about 8 metres. The plant has a green, columnar trunk with long, hard, white thorns. During the summer, large white flowers can bloom at the top of the trunk. From these flowers, reddish fruits are formed.
Care
The Stetsonia coryne prefers a sunny location and well-draining soil. It's resistant to drought and requires little water, especially during the winter months. It's recommended to not expose the plant to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius to prevent any damage. Even though the plant overall doesn't require a lot of maintenance, it's advised to fertilise it yearly for optimal growth.
