Origin
The Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the white bird of paradise plant, originates from South Africa. The plant belongs to the Strelitziaceae family and predominantly occurs in coastal forests, thus it thrives in subtropical regions. They are typically found in the wild in places with plenty of sun and sufficient moisture.
Characteristics
The Strelitzia nicolai is characterised by its large, deep green, feathery leaves. The plant can reach a height of over six metres. The flowers resemble the head of a crane with a dark purple crest and long, beak-like white calyx. The seeds of the plant are a dull blue colour, encased in an orange husk.
Care
The Strelitzia nicolai requires specific care to thrive. The plant prefers indirect sunlight and needs regular watering, without the soil becoming waterlogged. The plant can survive temperatures down to freezing, but thrives best at temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. In the winter months, the watering can be reduced.
