Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki' is a Japanese maple that originates from East Asia. It is one of the most well-known Acer species in Japan, where it is used in both traditional garden architecture and within the framework of Bonsai culture. This specific variety, 'Osakazuki', is known in Japan for its strikingly beautiful autumn colours.
Characteristics
The Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki' is a medium-sized maple species that can reach a height between 4 and 6 meters. A distinctive feature is its large, seven-lobed green leaves that transform into a spectacular bright scarlet in the autumn. The leaves are larger than those of most other Acer species. In the spring, the 'Osakazuki' produces inconspicuous red flowers that give way to bright red fruits in the autumn.
Care
The Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki' is a robust plant that requires little maintenance. However, a position in partial shade to full sun is recommended to achieve the best autumn colours. It is important to use a well-draining, humus-rich soil to prevent the roots from becoming too wet. On the whole, the 'Osakazuki' is resistant to most diseases, but in extreme humidity, there may be a risk of powdery mildew. In such cases, specialised disease control is necessary.
