Origin
The Beaucarnea bulb originates from Mexico and belongs to the Asparagaceae family. This unique genus of plants includes about 30 different species. In nature, the Beaucarnea bulb mainly grows in dry savannas and forests. The plant tolerates extreme drought by storing water in its bulbous trunk and is thus a typical survivor in arid regions.
Characteristics
Characteristic of the Beaucarnea bulb, also known as the Elephant's Foot, are the bulbous trunk and thin shoots that come out of the top of the trunk. These shoots develop into long, slim, green leaves. Under ideal conditions, the Beaucarnea bulb can grow to an impressive height of up to 8 metres. Nevertheless, the plant grows rather slowly and as such is suitable as a house plant in most cases.
Care
For healthy growth, the Beaucarnea bulb requires a light location, but also tolerates partial shade. The plant only needs moderate water, especially in the summer months, as it stores moisture in its bulbous trunk to protect against drier periods. Too much water can lead to root rot. The Beaucarnea bulb does not have specific nutritional requirements; a universal house plant fertiliser is sufficient. As the plant grows slowly, it doesn't require pot changes often.
