Origin
The Bambusa ventricosa, best known as 'Buddha’s belly bamboo', originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. This evergreen bamboo species predominantly grows in countries such as China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. The plant is accustomed to a perpetually warm climate and thrives in both lowlands and high-altitude areas.
Characteristics
The Bambusa ventricosa differs from other bamboo species due to its unique trunks that are thickened in the middle, thus earning its nickname 'Buddha’s belly bamboo'. This plant can grow up to 12 metres tall, and the trunks range in thickness from 3 to 5 centimetres. The leaf of the Bambusa ventricosa is dark green and can grow up to 20 centimetres long and 2.5 centimetres wide.
Care
Caring for the Bambusa ventricosa is relatively straightforward. The plant prefers a sunny to semi-shaded location and has moderate water needs. A well-drained soil is essential to prevent root rot, while regular fertilisation aids in promoting healthy growth. This bamboo species is hardy, but some protection is recommended in case of severe frost.
