Origin
Pilea peperomioides, also known as the Chinese money plant, originates from southwestern China. In this region, the plant grows in the shadow of cliffs and tall forests. The plant was brought to Europe in the 1940s by Norwegian missionary Agnar Espegren.
Characteristics
Pilea peperomioides is characterised by its round, dark green leaves that grow on long stems. This is what earned it its nickname 'Chinese money plant'. The plant has a compact growth and typically reaches a maximum height of about 30 centimetres. In good conditions, new shoots will originate at the foot of the plant.
Care
When caring for Pilea peperomioides, one has to take into account certain specific requirements. This plant prefers a light position but does not tolerate direct sunlight. The soil must be well-drained and the plant prefers a moist environment. However, overwatering should be avoided as this can lead to root rot. Lastly, it is recommended to fertilise Pilea peperomioides once a month during the growing period.
