Buxus harlandii
F00002146
Origin
The Ficus retusa, also known as the Banyan fig tree, originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the Far East. This evergreen tree is common in countries such as China, Malaysia and Australia. It is a diverse species within the large Ficus family, which has over 800 species worldwide.
Characteristics
The Ficus retusa is a robust plant known for its unique trunk which can intertwine over time. The leaves of this plant are thick, shiny and have a dark green colour. Due to its flexible growth, the Ficus retusa can be pruned well and is a popular plant for bonsai. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers and small figs, but this rarely happens indoors.
Care
For optimal growth, the Ficus retusa requires bright, indirect light, but it can also thrive in lower light conditions. The plant has moderate watering needs and should only be watered when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. It is a tropical plant, so high humidity is optimal, but the Ficus retusa can also survive in an indoor climate with lower humidity.
