Origin
The Ilex crenata Kimne, otherwise known as the Japanese holly, originates from East Asia. Here, the plant naturally grows in the mountains and forests. The plant has been popular in Japan and China for centuries for use in landscape architecture, and it is its versatility and adapted growth patterns which have also earned this plant its popularity in the Western world.
Characteristics
The Ilex crenata Kimne is an evergreen shrub with dark green, small, shiny leaves similar to those of the Buxus. It is a compact and slow growing plant that can eventually reach a height of about a metre. In spring, the plant produces small white flowers that form black berries in the autumn, although these are often hidden by the dense foliage.
Care
The Ilex crenata Kimne thrives in bright to semi-shade locations and can grow well in normal, well-drained garden soil. This plant requires little maintenance, once planted it can grow without problems for many years. Pruning is possible to maintain the desired shape, but is not necessary for the health of the plant. Watering is usually only necessary during prolonged dry periods.
