Origin
The Magnolia grandiflora Kay Parris is a cultivar of the Magnolia grandiflora, originating from the southeastern United States. This cultivar was developed in the late 20th century and takes its name from the grower who selected this variety, Kay Parris.
Characteristics
The Magnolia grandiflora Kay Parris is prized for its evergreen nature and striking flowers. The cultivar is small and compact compared to the original species. The tree has shiny, leathery leaves with a rust-coloured underside. The white, fragrant flowers appear in late spring and summer and can reach a diameter of up to 25 centimetres.
Care
For optimal growth, the Magnolia grandiflora Kay Parris requires well-draining, rich and somewhat acidic soil. Although the tree can survive in partial shade, full sun is recommended for the best flowering. The plant is reasonably hardy, but needs protection against harsh, drying winds. It is advisable to water the young trees regularly in the first years after planting.
