Origin
The Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin', also known as the Variegated Spindle, has its origin in East Asia. It is a plant species from the spindle family (Celastraceae) and is named after the Scottish plant collector Robert Fortune. This plant was introduced in Europe around the mid-nineteenth century.
Characteristics
The Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' is a hardy, evergreen climber that is characterised by its unique leaf colour. The leaves are green with white edges and the young shoots are sometimes pink, providing an attractive contrast. The plant typically grows to a height of about 50 centimetres. Despite being a climber, this species can also be used as a ground cover.
Care
The Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' is a low-maintenance plant that grows best in partial shade, but it can also tolerate either full sun or deep shade. The plant prefers well-draining soil rich in organic material, but it is fairly tolerant of different soil types. Pruning is not necessary, but can be carried out after the winter to keep the plant in shape. During prolonged periods of drought, it is advisable to supply the plant with additional water.
