Origin
The Osmanthus x burkwoodii, also known as the Burkwood Osmanthus, is a hybrid ornamental plant that originated in the gardens of Burkwood and Skipwith in England around 1928. It is the result of a cross between the Osmanthus decorus from the Caucasus and the Osmanthus delavayi from China.
Characteristics
The Osmanthus x burkwoodii is an evergreen shrub appreciated for its dark green, glossy leaves and fragrant white flowers. These flowers appear in the spring and fill the surroundings with a strong, sweet scent. The growth habit is compact and the plant can reach up to 3 metres in height, but remains generally smaller in most garden settings.
Care
The care of the Osmanthus x burkwoodii is relatively straightforward. It grows best in well-drained, moist soil in a location with full sun to partial shade. Although it is hardy, the plant needs protection against severe frost. Pruning is generally not necessary unless the plant becomes too large or out of shape. When watering, make sure that the soil is moist but not soaked. Regular fertilisation during the growing season contributes to healthy growth and bloom.
