Origin
The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora 'Variagata', also known as the 'Paddle Plant', is a member of the Crassulaceae family and originates from South Africa. In its natural habitat, this plant grows in rocky and dry areas. It was first described in literature in 1859 by German anatomist and botanist Carl Peter Thunberg.

Characteristics
The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora 'Variagata' is a succulent with thick, leathery leaves, often marked with a distinctive yellow to cream-coloured variegation. The leaves have a unique, fan-like arrangement, making them resemble a set of paddles. This plant can achieve a height of 45 to 60 centimetres. The flowering is striking: it produces orange-yellow, tubular flowers on long, upright stems.

Care
The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora 'Variagata' requires full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Ensure the plant is not constantly wet to avoid root rot. This plant is drought-resistant, but performs better if there is a moderate amount of water available, especially during the growing period. It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12 and can be kept as an indoor plant outside these zones, as long as a sufficient light source is provided.
