Origin
The Euphorbia lactea, also known as the Mottled Spurge, is a succulent originally from the tropical regions of India. The plant grows there in dry, rocky environments where little other vegetation is found. It is a species native to this region and has been able to adapt to the challenging conditions there.
Characteristics
A distinctive feature of the Euphorbia lactea is its grooved stems with small spikes, giving it a striking and unique appearance. The stems are usually green in colour, although there are varieties with cream or white stems. During the growth period, the plant can produce small, inconspicuous flowers. The Euphorbia lactea can grow up to 5 meters high, although under household conditions it often remains smaller.
Care
Caring for the Euphorbia lactea requires a sunny location in the house and well-draining soil, to prevent root rot. The plant prefers warm temperatures and dry conditions, which corresponds with its natural habitat. When watering it's important to be moderate and to allow the plant to fully dry out between waterings. In winter the plant goes dormant, and watering should be reduced. Despite these specific care requirements, the Euphorbia lactea is a relatively low-maintenance plant.
