Origin
The Portulacaria afra 'Variegata', also known as the Tricolor Jade plant, is a type of succulent originating from South Africa. It is mainly found in dry, rocky regions and semi-desert areas. The plant has been able to adapt in these areas by developing a capacity to structurally store water in its body.
Characteristics
Characteristics of the Portulacaria afra 'Variegata' include its small oval leaves that have a combination of green and cream coloured hues, which are alternately arranged on thick, fleshy trunks. These trunks can branch out abundantly, causing the plant to expand in width. Under optimal conditions, the plant can reach a height of up to two meters. It is a succulent plant, meaning it stores water in various parts of the plant, such as the leaves, stems and roots.
Care
The Portulacaria afra 'Variegata' is a succulent that is relatively easy to care for. It requires a sunny to semi-shady location with well-draining soil to prevent the roots from rotting from excessive moisture. In the summer, the plant can be watered on average once a week, but in winter, watering should be significantly reduced as the plant is in a resting phase. Light frost is generally well tolerated, but during heavier frosts, it is recommended to protect the plant or bring it indoors.
