Origin
Portulacaria afra, also known as the elephant bush, is a succulent of South African origin. This plant is predominantly found in dry, rocky areas and is commonly seen in the South African provinces of Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
Characteristics
The Portulacaria afra is a robust, bushy, perennial plant with dense branches and small oval, bright green leaves. This succulent can grow up to 4 metres in height and has a growth pattern that resembles that of a small tree. During the growing season, the plant can produce small pink flowers that are attractive to bees and butterflies.
Care
As for care, the Portulacaria afra requires lots of light and little watering. It is recommended to place the plant in well-draining potting soil and only water when the soil is completely dry. Every two to three years, the plant should be repotted to stimulate new growth. In cold climates, it is advisable to keep the plant indoors, as it is not very frost resistant.
