Origin
The Espostoa melanostele, also known as the Peruvian Old Man cactus, originates from the Andes in Peru. It primarily grows in higher regions of the area, preferably on rocky terrain. The dry and cold climate here is ideal for this cactus species.
Characteristics
The Espostoa melanostele is a column-shaped cactus that can grow up to 4 metres in height. It is characterised by its dense, white spikes that form a layer of hair around the cactus. The 'old man' look is further enhanced by the remarkable flowers that usually bloom at night and are commonly white or pink in colour. These flowers grow at the top of the plant and attract a variety of moths due to their scent.
Care
The care of the Espostoa melanostele is relatively straightforward. The plant needs a lot of sunlight and should be placed in a well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Although it can tolerate low temperatures, it should be protected from frost. Regarding watering, given its origin, it prefers a dry environment, which means that it's enough to water it occasionally and ensure that the soil completely dries out between waterings.
