Origin
The Oreocereus celsianus, also known as the Old Man of the Andes, is a cactus species native to the high mountain regions of Argentina and Bolivia. The plant grows at altitudes of 3000 to 4000 metres above sea level, in rocky areas with poor soil. The species is named after the French botanist Alexandre de Cassini.
Characteristics
The Oreocereus celsianus is a slow grower with a columnar structure, which can reach up to a height of 3 metres. The plant has multiple ribs interspersed with dense white hairs, giving the plant its characteristic appearance. The hairs act as a form of protection against the intense sunlight at high altitudes. In addition, the plant produces small red or orange flowers in the summer.
Care
The Oreocereus celsianus requires little water and it is important to allow the soil to completely dry out between watering. It cannot tolerate standing water, otherwise it risk the root rotting. The plant needs a lot of light, but must be protected from intense afternoon sun. During the winter, the plant should be kept in a cool, dry place as it needs a resting period in order to bloom.
