The Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' is a Japanese maple that originally comes from East Asia, specifically Japan, China and Korea. This plant is part of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). This decorative maple has been cultivated for centuries in Japan for its aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Characteristics
The 'Crimson Queen' is known for its deep red leaves and graceful hanging branches. The leaves are deeply incised and have five to seven lobes with a finely serrated edge, which turn a wonderful scarlet colour in the fall. The plant is quite compact and reaches a mature height of up to four metres. In addition, the 'Crimson Queen' produces small purple flowers followed by red fruits.
Care
As for care, the Acer pal. diss 'Crimson Queen' prefers partial shade to full sun, but requires protection from harsh winds. The plant prefers well-draining, acidic to neutral soils. It's important to keep the soil moist, but too much water can cause root rot. This plant is hardy, but young plants may need to be protected from severe frost. Regular pruning is not necessary, except to remove dead branches or maintain the desired shape.
