Acer pal. 'Bloodgood' (130-160)

Origin
The Acer palmatum dissectum 'Viridis' is a cultivar of the Japanese Maple and is also known as the Green Japanese Maple. This species originally comes from Japan, Korea, and China. Over the centuries, growers have developed the plant in many different forms and colours, with the 'Viridis' distinguished by its specific green colour.
Characteristics
The 'Viridis' is a striking evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 3 metres high. Characteristic are the hand-shaped leaves with deeply incised, or 'dissected', edges. In autumn, the colour of the foliage changes from bright green to dazzling yellow. Moreover, the 'Viridis' develops subtle red flowers in late spring and early summer, followed by the formation of decorative, red fruits.
Care
The Acer palmatum dissectum 'Viridis' requires a well-draining, slightly acidic soil and a spot in the semi-shade, although it can withstand full sun, provided it's watered well. The 'Viridis' is a hardy plant that can handle winter conditions, although a dry, sheltered spot in winter is ideal. The deep, dissecting leaf requires minimal pruning, aside from removing dead or diseased branches. Generally, this variety is relatively low maintenance, but regular watering during dry periods and an annual top-up of the soil with organic material can help promote healthy growth.
