Origin
The Cupressus sempervirens 'Totem', also known as the Italian cypress, originates from the eastern Mediterranean region. This area extends from western Turkey to Lebanon and Israel in the east, and to the west through southern Greece, such as Crete. The species is also often found in other regions such as Iran and Afghanistan. The name 'Totem' is derived from the characteristic narrow, totem-like shape of the tree.
Characteristics
The 'Totem' is a tree that can grow up to 30 metres high with a very narrow crown. The leaves are small, scale-like and evergreen. They have a glossy green to dark green appearance and a leathery feel. The cones of the tree are spherical, about 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter, and mature about 20 months after pollination. This species is resistant to many weather conditions, but thrives best in sun-drenched climates.
Care
The Italian Cypress 'Totem' is so well-adapted to the Mediterranean that it has required little care over the centuries. Although the tree thrives in well-drained soil, it has managed to withstand infertile slopes and dry conditions. Despite its drought tolerance, the tree should be watered regularly, especially in the first few years after planting. Pruning is generally not recommended as this can disrupt the natural, narrow form of the tree. But if necessary, pruning can be done in late spring or early summer.
