Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the European olive tree, has its origin in the Mediterranean region. It was cultivated in Mediterranean climates over 6000 years ago. Over the centuries, the plant spread to other parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and America.
Characteristics
The Olea europaea is an evergreen tree that can reach up to 10 meters in height. It is characterised by its grey-green leaves that are silver-coloured on the underside. The tree bears small fragrant, white flowers, followed by round fruits that turn from green to black as they ripen. These fruits, better known as olives, are used both for consumption and for olive oil production.
Care
Optimum growth of the Olea europaea requires full sun and well-drained soil. While drought-tolerant, the plant thrives best with regular watering during dry periods. Pruning is not necessary but can be used to manage the shape and size of the tree. Winter protection may be necessary in colder climates.
