Origin
The Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri Nana' belongs to the Pinaceae family and is primarily found in the colder climates of the Northern Hemisphere, for example in Scandinavia and Russia. It is a cultivar of the Pinus sylvestris, also known as the Scotch Pine.
Characteristics
The Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri Nana' is a compact shrub-like conifer that reaches a height between 160 and 180 cm. The needles are in bundles of two and have a bluish-green colour. The bark is brown-red in colour and peels in flat strips, creating an attractive texture. This species of conifer bears cones which are red-brown to grey-brown in colour and has a slow growth rate.
Care
For optimal growth, the Pinus sylvestris 'Watereri Nana' requires a sunny to semi-shady location. It thrives well on sandy, loamy or clay soils with a neutral pH. A well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot. Despite its resistance to cold, it is important to protect the plant in severe frost, especially during the first few years after planting. Regular pruning is not necessary, but can be useful to maintain a certain shape or to remove dead or damaged branches.
