Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese fan palm, has its origin in East Asia, more specifically in the mountainous region of China and Myanmar. The species was introduced in Europe in 1849 where it is used as an ornamental palm in parks and gardens.

Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an evergreen palm with a long, straight trunk that can grow up to 12 meters high. The leaves are fan-shaped, deeply cut, and can reach a diameter of nearly 100 centimetres. In spring, the palm produces small yellow flowers in large clusters which are followed by small, blue-coloured fruits in the late summer.

Care
Although the Trachycarpus fortunei is a subtropical plant, it is remarkably frost-resistant and can survive temperatures down to -15°C. The palm requires a sunny to semi-shaded location and well-draining, nourishing soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, but waterlogging should be avoided. Fertilising during the growing season promotes the growth of the palm.
