Origin
The Washingtonia filifera, also known as the California fan palm, is originally found in the southwest of the United States and Northwest Mexico. The species grows in oases, canyons, and dry riverbeds in the Sonora and Mojave deserts.
Characteristics
The Washingtonia filifera is a perennial palm species and can grow up to 15-20 metres high. The trunk of the palm is thick and often covered with dead leaves that form a unique "skirt" around the trunk. The leaves are large and fan-like, up to 3 metres wide, and have fibrous edges.
Care
The California fan palm requires full sun and well-drained soil. The plant is very tolerant of various soil types including sand, loam, and clay. Despite its desert origin, this palm species needs regular watering and is well-resistant to periods of drought once it has properly acclimated. Its ability to withstand temperatures of up to -10°C makes the Washingtonia filifera suitable for cooler climates.
