Archontophoenix alexandrae (350-400)
Stem
4ARALRS97
Origin
The Archontophoenix alexandrae, also known as the Alexandra palm, originates from the east of Australia. This tree can be found in tropical and subtropical rainforests, specifically in the coastal area of Queensland. It was named after Princess Alexandra of Denmark, the queen consort of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom.
Characteristics
The Archontophoenix alexandrae is a tall, slender palm that can grow up to 30 metres in height. The trunk is straight, smooth and has ring-shaped scars from previous leaves. The leaves themselves are feather-shaped, up to 2 metres long and have a bright green colour. This type of palm produces long, woody floral clusters from its crown with small white, fragrant flowers and bright red fruits.
Care
Caring for Archontophoenix alexandrae requires a spot with sufficient sunlight and protection from cold winter temperatures. This palm requires moist but well-drained soil. It is important that the palm gets watered regularly, especially in the drier months, but overwatering must be avoided. A rich, organic fertiliser that is applied twice a year promotes the growth and health of the tree.
