Origin
The Zamia furfuracea, also known as the Cardboard Palm, originates from Southeast Mexico. This region is known for its tropical climate and the plant grows wild along the coastlines. The Cardboard Palm is one of the oldest extant plants and is characterised by its prehistoric appearance.
Characteristics
The Zamia furfuracea is a unique plant with characteristics of both ferns and palms. This can be recognised by the coarse, feathery leaves that resemble those of a palm but are grouped in a rosette shape like many ferns. The leaves are thick and leathery with a waxy coating, which led to the name 'Cardboard Palm'. The plant also bears striking, cone-shaped seed cones, which add an interesting visual element to the landscape.
Care
The Zamia furfuracea requires a certain level of care and attention. The plant needs full to partial sunlight and thrives in well-draining soil. This species requires regular but not excessive watering and poorly tolerates overwatering. In addition, the Zamia furfuracea is a slow-growing plant, so it needs ample time and space to develop.
