Origin
The Wodyetia bifurcata, also known as the foxtail palm, is a variety of palm that originated from Queensland, Australia. This palm species was only discovered for scientific purposes in 1983, making it one of the most recently discovered palm varieties.
Characteristics
The Wodyetia bifurcata is easily identifiable by its unique frame. The palm has a slender, grey trunk and can grow up to 10 metres tall. The most noticeable characteristic is the foliage, which is shaped like a plume or a fox's tail, hence the moniker foxtail palm. Each petiole bears around a dozen leaves, and each leaf can grow up to 2 metres long.
Care
The Wodyetia bifurcata requires full sun and well-draining soil in which to grow. Although the palm is drought-tolerant, it performs best when watered regularly. Standing water can cause root rot, so it's important to ensure sufficient drainage. The palm is also tolerant of a wide range of soil types, from sandy to loamy and clay. However, the palm performs best in a nutrient-rich, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
