Origin
The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Japan Red' is a cultivated variety of the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, a species of the cactus family. The original species comes from South America, particularly Paraguay and Northern Argentina. The 'Japan Red', as the name suggests, was developed in Japan through selective breeding.
Characteristics
The distinctive characteristic of the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Japan Red' is its red colour, which is unique within the cactus family. With its spherical, somewhat flattened shape and spines distributed across the plant, this cactus has a striking appearance. The plant can grow to a height and diameter of approximately 5 centimeters. Another feature is that this plant can produce flowers, which are usually white in colour and bloom in the summer months.
Care
In terms of care, the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Japan Red' has few special requirements. The plant prefers a light to half-shadowy location and temperatures above 10°C. The watering must be moderate - the soil may dry out between watering sessions. In the summer, the cactus can be fertilized once a month with a cactus fertilizer, while in the winter months the plant has a rest period and therefore needs no water or fertilizer.
