Origin
Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady', also known as the Black Olive tree, originates from the tropical parts of America, ranging from Florida to Brazil. Its natural habitat consists of sun-drenched, dry woodland areas and it is often found along the coast where it thrives excellently.
Characteristics
The 'Shady Lady' is a very attractive, slow-growing and evergreen tree that typically reaches a height of 7.5 meters. It is well known for its beautiful, glossy leaves and gracefully drooping, blackish branches from which it derives its name. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by black fruits that resemble olives.
Care
Although the Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady' is a tropical tree, it is surprisingly drought-resistant and can even grow well on poorer soils. The tree requires little care, but will thrive best when fully exposed to the sun and in well-drained soil. As the tree grows slowly, it is usually not necessary to prune a lot, unless one wishes to keep the tree in a certain shape.
